As the oldest Veterinary College in the American Continent (established in 1853), the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FMVZ) of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) has a long tradition of excellence in veterinary education, research and extension. It is the most influential veterinary college in Mexico, and one of the most important and recognized in Latin America. The FMVZ is dedicated to integrally educate competent persons committed to the well-being of society through the use, generation and dissemination of scientific knowledge and technology in veterinary medicine and animal production, while promoting animal welfare. We are committed to educate veterinarians with knowledge, skills and abilities that allow them to practice with confidence and leadership on the different areas of the profession: medicine and health of domestic animals and wildlife; economically viable and sustainable animal production; food quality and safety; public health; and environmental protection and care. We are committed to conduct research to improve animal and public health and to optimize animal production, with due respect for the environment and for the welfare of the animals.

Our Main Veterinary Unit is located in the southern area of Mexico City, where the first seven semesters of the curriculum are delivered. Semesters 8th to 11th are carried out at a variety of sites. Our clinical resources include two Small Animal Teaching Hospitals (one for primary care and the other for referral services), an Equine Teaching Hospital, a Small-Wildlife Teaching Hospital, a Companion Bird and Avian Wildlife Hospital, three ambulatory clinics for equine medicine and welfare, two ambulatory clinics for reproductive control of dog and cats and one mobile surgery unit for large animals. Beside, we have faculty staff permanently assigned at Zoos and laboratory animal facilities.

Our core curriculum has a strong comparative approach where food producing animals play an important role. Our offering of food-animal elective clinical and herd-health courses, rotations, preceptorships and social service programs include dairy cattle, beef cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, tropical animal production, poultry, laying hens, honeybees, and aquatic organisms, all of them backed by our large infrastructure of seven Teaching and Research Farms. Ambulatory and field services provided from these sites allow our students to face the many realities of food animal medicine and herd health. More than 90 faculty members are assigned to food-animal departments and teaching farms.

Professional education provided at UNAM is essentially free for all Mexican students. Foreign students pay a yearly tuition of less than 600 U.S. dollars. This allows our students to start their professional lives free of student debt. You must take into account that all courses are taught in Spanish, so that good command of the language is required.
