St. George’s University’s four-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree program offers students a unique, innovative, international approach to veterinary medicine.

With an emphasis in clinical instruction and case-based teaching, SGU’s DVM degree program combines three years of lecture and hands-on laboratory sessions in Grenada with one year of clinical training at one of over 30 affiliated schools of veterinary medicine in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, the Netherlands and Australia.

Curriculum and Format

SGU’s DVM degree program is designed to equip aspiring veterinarians with the integrated comprehensive knowledge, clinical, and professional skills that are necessary for success in modern veterinary practice. Our pedagogical approach focuses on flipped and blended learning methods and allows students to build long-term knowledge and skill retention, promoting a culture of self-directed lifelong learning. Students will actively engage with the course material by preparing for lessons prior to in-class active learning sessions and laboratories. Throughout the curriculum, case-based clinical reasoning sessions are integrated to provide students with a solid foundation for their future careers in veterinary medicine. In the spiral design, the first three terms (first spiral) will focus on healthy animals and disease processes, and terms 4, 5 and 6 (second spiral) focus on clinical case management with increasing complexity of the integrated systems content.

The final year includes 48 weeks of clinical training, delivered at our AVMA-accredited affiliated veterinary medical schools. These partnerships allow you to be fully integrated and train alongside final-year students at schools in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, the Netherlands and Australia. You may develop externship opportunities to bolster your practical experience.

Alongside the clinical training, you receive 20 weeks of instruction in seven core subjects and 28 weeks of electives that may be a continuation of core subjects or concentrations in select specialties. The clinical core subjects include a minimum of four weeks in Small Animal Medicine, four weeks in Small Animal Surgery, six weeks of Large Animal Medicine and Surgery; and two weeks each in Diagnostic Laboratory, Clinical Anesthesiology, and Diagnostic Imaging. The remaining weeks of the clinical program are made up of elective rotations including specialty rotations such as ophthalmology and dermatology.

Department Of Educational Services

The Department of Educational Services (DES) plays a key role in supporting all students and faculty at SGU, and the academic and professional success of all our students is our primary goal.

Comprised of many dedicated academic professionals, DES’s unique and highly effective faculty is the largest on campus. Close to 100 percent of the University’s students and many of the professors in all schools avail themselves of the support offered through the department’s innovative programs, including time management, note-taking skills, and utilizing technology effectively in teaching and learning, as well as individualized programs with training in reading efficiency and comprehension, writing, oral communication, pronunciation, and grammatical accuracy. Most fundamentally, DES assists students individually and in groups as they prepare for course and licensure examinations.

DES is a central and established part of the academic culture at SGU, and the department works closely with all schools and programs, as well as with the Dean of Students Office, to provide custom-tailored support regarding academic and non-academic issues. DES also offers a faculty development program designed to support faculty in their pursuit of excellence in scholarship, teaching and learning with seminars and workshops in new and evolving methods of instruction.
