The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies was founded in 1823 by William Dick and has a 200 year history of veterinary teaching. Today we are recognised as an international leader in veterinary education, research and practice, and are consistently ranked as one of the top schools in the United Kingdom and globally.

As a School with a truly international outlook, we are accredited by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education (EAEVE), the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) and the Australasia Veterinary Boards Council Inc (AVBC), allowing our graduates to practice veterinary medicine throughout the UK, North America, Europe, South Africa, Australasia and beyond.

Veterinary Medicine at Edinburgh mixes the best of tradition with award winning, progressive teaching. Clinical and professional skills are taught from the earliest stages. The Easter Bush Campus is a purpose-built home for veterinary teaching, research and practice. The Roslin Institute (now the research arm of the Veterinary School) is an animal sciences research institute, which won international fame in 1996, when Ian Wilmut, Keith Campbell and their colleagues created Dolly the sheep, the first mammal to be cloned from an adult cell. The Graduate Entry Program (GEP) is a four-year program which allows graduates with a first degree in a biological or animal science subject to attain a Bachelor of Veterinary and Surgery (BVM&S) degree and register as a veterinary surgeon. The BVM&S is the equivalent of a DVM. The GEP is tailored to cover key areas of integrated anatomy and physiology in a case-based format with additional courses on introductory pathology, infectious disease, animal husbandry and population medicine. Studying Veterinary Medicine at Edinburgh will give you transferable skills such as effective communication, team building and understanding of business management. Veterinary training also provides an outstanding background for those who wish to pursue a career in biomedical research, including both veterinary and human medicine.
