Research
- WSU has multiple opportunities to engage in dynamic research programs throughout all four years. Opportunities include the Summer Research Program, research elective/supplemental core courses, and the Northwest Bovine Veterinary Experience Program.
Other Academic Programs
- Highly motivated and uniquely qualified individuals may gain early acceptance (pre-admission) and early entry (admission) into the professional veterinary medical program. In cooperation with the WSU College of Veterinary Medicine, the WSU Honors College offers the Honors Pre-Admit Veterinary Medicine Program and the Department of Animal Sciences offers the Combined Program in Animal Sciences and Veterinary Medicine.
Curriculum
- We offer a strong curriculum with the primary goal being to impart the knowledge and skills that our graduates will need to deliver high quality health care to a range of domestic and exotic animal species. A secondary goal is to foster a general curriculum with sufficient flexibility that allows a student to learn the basics while preparing for a specific career path at an entry level. We have a traditional curriculum with the first two years focused on basic science training (with clinical integration), the third year focusing on clinical medicine and the fourth dedicated to hands-on clinical training within multiple rotation experiences through in-house and off-site rotations covering a wide range of species and aspects of professional training.
Clinicals begin
- Hands on experience begins on day one with access to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital all four years. Clinical rotations begin in fourth year.
Highlights
- The WSU Regional Program hosts a week-long orientation designed to promote personal leadership, community and wellness.
- Hands-on experience begins early in the program through our Veterinary Teaching Hospital with caseloads that provide experience in all areas of interest.
- Students at the Bozeman campus get hands-on experiences at primary care veterinary clinics in the greater Bozeman area.
- Clinical Simulation Center in Pullman offers opportunities for students in all four years to practice clinical skills ranging from basic to advanced surgical operations.
- Innovative education with a curriculum that exposes students to ethics, service, and leadership in veterinary medicine.
- Diagnostic Challenges are case-based exercises that are conducted collaboratively with faculty in multiple disciplines.
- Students take classes to learn skills in clinical communication, diagnostic reasoning, and may elect to take courses on how to manage a veterinary practice as a part of the Veterinary Business Management Association Certificate Program.
- The Northwest Bovine Veterinary Experience Program helps prepare veterinary students for a career working with livestock. Students gain first-hand experience working with veterinarians on commercial dairy or cattle operations.
- The Humane Society shelter medicine fourth year clinical rotation is a partnership with regional humane societies to give our students an extraordinary educational opportunity in community-based, wellness-centered, primary care facilities during their final year in school.
- The Paul G. Allen School for Global Health builds on the college’s rich history of research on animal diseases that directly impact human health and offers DVM students the opportunity to participate in that research, in addition to multiple other research opportunities throughout the college.
